SCALING & ROOT PLANING (GUM THERAPY)

WHAT IS GUM DISEASE?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a degenerative condition that affects the gums and tissues that support the teeth. Caused by bacteria in plaque, gum disease typically results in gums that are tender, swollen, red, and bleed easily during the early stages. If allowed to progress, periodontal disease may lead to bone loss, receding gums, and tooth loss. At Red Bird Family Dental, our dentists provide gum therapy to treat gum disease and prevent these serious consequences.

WHAT IS SCALING AND ROOT PLANING?

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning treatment often recommended to treat gum disease in Houston, Texas. This treatment involves removing plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from the teeth, both above and below the gum line. Depending on your specific condition, Drs. Kim, Han, Cook, and Cho may recommend anesthetic to numb the area before your treatment. Once the tooth surface has been carefully cleaned, it is smoother, making it easier for the gum tissues to reattach and heal.
